Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I don't get it. What are we doing?
A: We are reading books. Teachers have selected 36 great books and all you have to do is pick any TEN to read. Read all ten before April 16 and conquer the challenge.

Q: Do I get a prize or something?
A: Anyone who completes the challenge will get a $25 gift certificate and a free ride to Borders Books in Fort Wayne. In April, all of us will board a bus -- a.k.a. big yellow limo --and travel together. It will be great fun.

Q: How will you know if I really read the book?
A: This challenge is not about being deceitful, it is about reading and talking about some great books. We will know you read the book if you say you read the book. That is honesty. Once you complete the book, you just have to meet with the sponsoring teacher at your leisure and have a chat. The teacher will give you a completion form which you will turn in to the media center to document your progress.

Q: Wait a minute. Is the "chat" really some kind of quiz in disguise?
A: It really is not a quiz, but more of an opportunity for you to talk with someone who has read this book and really likes it. The teacher will ask you some questions about the book, but you can ask questions too! It is supposed to be more of a conversation than a quiz.

Q: When am I supposed to have this "chat"?
A: Twice a month, you can use your SSR time to meet with a teacher. Teachers have also posted times they are available on this website. Just be sure to schedule a time to chat soon after you read the book.

Q: What is the purpose of all this?
A: Two-fold: 1) to encourage literacy and 2) to encourage connections to be made between students and staff. We will all be reading some of the same books, so we will have more to talk about than school delays and lunch menus.

Q: Are there any good books or just dumb books?
A: The teachers purposely chose a wide-range of books. All of the books have some type of official recognition as being a "good" book. Some come from best seller lists, some come from classic lists, and some have won international awards. We picked them because we think you will like them.

Q: Hey, I have already read some of these. Can I get credit for the ones I have read?
A: The challenge is to read ten books between October 16, 2009 and April 16, 2010. If you have read some of them already, then you can either pick other books from the list or reread your favorites.

Q: Where can I get the books?
A: The West Noble Media Center has several copies of every book. The Noble County Public Library in Albion and the Ligonier Public Library will also have copies of most of these books. In some cases, the sponsoring teacher will have a copy you can borrow too.

Q: What if the book I want is already checked-out?
A: Choose another one. That is why there are thirty-six on the list. You will likely be able to get a copy of the book you want in a couple weeks. Keeping checking in the Media Center.

Q: What if my English skills are not so great? Can I read it in Spanish?
A: Yes, of course. The library has several books in Spanish and is ordering more.

Q: How fast can I go?
A: As fast as you want. The challenge is paced to last six months. That means if you read one book every two weeks, you will complete the challenge with time to spare. Some books will take less than two weeks, some more. It is totally up to you how long you want to spend on each book.

Q: I am ready to choose a book. Where do I go from here?
A: This website was created to help you learn more about the books available. The books are listed on the right side of the page. Click on titles that interest you to learn more. You can also talk to someone in the Media Center or any of your teachers. Here's a good idea: ask your friends what books they are reading and start a reading group!

Q: Wait! I have one more question!
A: Click on the comment link below and post your question. We will post a response.
